Sweet and Sour Asian Style Pizza

This attempt at pizza without the traditional ingredients was one of the happiest experiments in our kitchen yet! Read below for the ingredients to this fantastic vegan pizza!

Ingredients:

Dough:

-2 cups flour

-1 tsp salt

-1 cup warm water

-1 tsp active dry yeast

-1 tsp sugar

Base sauce:

-1/2 cup Heinz Chili sauce

-1/2 cup grape jam

Toppings:

-1 tbsp olive oil

-2 cloves of garlic

-1/3 of a sweet onion

-1 tsp brown sugar

-1 tsp ground ginger

-1 package of jackfruit

-1 tbsp hoisin sauce

-1/2 tsp sriracha

-1/2 tsp nutritional yeast

-2 tbsp Heinz Chili sauce

-1/3 of a beefsteak tomato

-1/2 cup chopped baby greens mix

-1 tbsp chopped green onion

Directions:

For the dough:

-Preheat oven to 400 degrees

-Combine the water, yeast and sugar in a bowl, stir to mix, cover and let sit for 10 minutes

-In a separate bowl, combine the flour and salt

-After 10 minutes, add the yeast mix to the flour and salt. To do this, make a creator in the center of the flour and dump in there

-Knead dough together, adding small amounts of flour as needed to keep dough from getting sticky

-Once dough is formed (should be moist but not sticky) place in a bowl, cover and let sit for 30 minutes

-After 30 minutes, cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and roll dough out to cover baking sheet, it should cover majority of a 18×13 inch baking sheet

-add sauce and toppings and bake for 25 minutes

For the base sauce:

-add the Chili sauce and jam to a pot over medium heat and heat for 10 minutes, stirring regularly until they have completely mixed together. Once mixed, reduce to low heat and let sit until ready to use

For the toppings:

-Finely chop or mince the garlic cloves

-In a small saucepan, add the olive oil and garlic and heat on high heat for approx 7 minutes until garlic has browned

-add the ginger and brown sugar and stir to mix, heat for 30-60 seconds over high heat

-chop up your sweet onion and add to the pan, stir to mix all ingredients and heat over high heat for 10 minutes until onions browned, add a splash of water initially to keep the onions from burning

-reduce to medium/low heat and heat for another 2-3 minutes

-remove from pan and set aside

-Using the same pan (don’t wash it, that way you’ll keep some of the flavour from the onions) add the jackfruit, Chili sauce, hoisin sauce, sriracha and nutritional yeast, stir to mix together and heat over medium heat for 5 minutes

-chop up the greens, tomato and green onion and set aside

Putting it together:

-Once your dough is on the baking sheet, cover with an even layer of sauce, sprinkle the jackfruit and onions all over and bake!

-Once baked, add the greens, tomato and green onion, don’t put them on before baking as they will wilt and get soggy

Optional: Drizzle finished pizza with hoisin sauce or sriracha!
